Jeni reports in from the Med..

Having done the hard yards visiting destinations and suppliers in eastern Europe Jeni is now putting together a series of accounts of her travels. These will focus on the high points for anyone thinking of traveling to these parts as well as familiarising us here at Sail Connections on what we need to do to put together the ultimate sailing holiday for you..

GREECE -   SAILING THE IONIAN

The Ionian Islands lie off the west coast of Greece and are known as the seven sisters lying from north to south Corfu, Paxos  Kefalonia, Lefkada, Ithaca, Zakynthos, and Kythira.  Amongst cruising yachtsmen, the Ionian islands are well known for their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, charming villages and safe harbours.    Each Ionian island has a distinct character and between them they offer a very special cruising experience. Distances are relatively short to the next charming seaside port or sheltered nature anchorage.

THE ISLAND OF LEFKADA is stitched to the mainland by a short causeway. Here the busy commercial centre of Lefkas is also a central point for yachts departing to explore the Ionian Islands

Nidri – town quay                                                                            Nidri – upper harbour anchorage
Amid the picturesque background of bays and boats Nidri sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s the most ‘touristy’ village on the island and is very busy. The main street is full of bars, fast food places and tourist shops.

Meganissi – Porto Spilia                                                                             Meganissi – Porto Spilia

MEGANISSI                                                                                                         Sailing from Nidri to Scorpios

Tucked away in a sheltered bay on Meganissi, we found Porto Spilia.  ‘Tied’ to the restaurant on our first night, we were immediately on holiday ‘Greek style’.  Next morning a run up the hill to the bakery ensured our fresh supply of daily bread and pastries

Sivota opens to a large natural harbour                      Sivota – popular for smaller yachts

Vassilki- fishing boats                                          Famous Lefkas honey straight from the hives

Porto Katsiki – the famous beach                                Porto Katsiki – Lefkada west coast is rugged

Porto Katiski can best be appreciated from a height looking down from a specially built platform high on the cliff.  We hired a car and explored the island of Lefkas by coastal road the day before we started our charter.

Cruising from Lefkas town the route takes you down the eastern side of the island, Nidri, Meganissi, Sivota, Vassiliki, and then departing for the islands of Kephalonia and Ithaca
