New Zealand Yacht Charter Guide

New Zealand is one of the few places where the best time to charter a boat is during the period from November to March. So if you are looking for a sailboat adventure in the northern hemisphere winter, New Zealand gives you the best of all worlds! Sailing in New Zealand is a truly unique yacht charter experience, taking you to sparkling island-studded bays, cobalt blue seas edged with long silvery beaches, pockets of subtropical forest, and towns & cities steeped in history and exuding charm. New Zealand is the cultural and administrative center of the South Pacific, with a population of just 4.5 million people. The country comprises two main islands and hundreds of smaller ones, stretching 1000 miles (1600 kms) from north to south between latitudes 35' and 47' South. The land area is similar to that of Colorado, USA, and slightly more than that of the United Kingdom.

About yacht charters in New Zealand

The country's largest city is Auckland, gateway to the Hauraki Gulf cruising grounds and beyond. These waters have over 76 islands that you can expolre during your cruise, and nowhere is far from a peaceful haven, with over 200 sheltered anchorages along the beautiful coastline that stretches for 150 mles (250 km) north to Whangaroa Harbour.

While the Hauraki Gulf is on Auckland's doorstep, the Bay of Islands is an equally renowned cruising destination. Here the cruising choices are almost endless, and the anchorages are often less crowded. As well as offering stunning natural scenery and abundant marine life, the Bay of Islands area will introduce you to early New Zealand history, being the place of first British colonial government.  To collect your charter boat here take sonly a three-hour drive from Auckland.

In the South Island, the Marlborough Sounds are a unique cruising paradise; waterways formed by a network of submerged mountain valleys, framed by majestic islands with bush-clad hills, while at the wtaer's edge tranquil sheltered bays abound.  The Marlborough Sounds are spectacular, with a thousand mile (1500 km) of deep-water coastline to explore.

Navigation

Due to their location close to Auckland and the climate of northern New Zealand,  the Hauraki Gulf and the Bay of Islands are the most popular yacht charter areas in New Zealand. The Hauraki Gulf is protected on its outer extremities by the Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island and Kawau Island. Between them and Auckland lie some 1500 square nautical miles of fabulous island cruising.

The Bay of Islands is a relatively compact area protected by the landmarks of Cape Brett and Ninepin Rock, whcih create an opening to the Pacific Ocean just 11 miles across. While there are many great places to explore within the confines of the Bay itself, no Bay of Islands yacht charter is complete without exploring the beautiful nearby coastline, which stretches from Tutukaka in the south to Whangaroa in the north. This is coastal sailing that beautifully showcases the pleasures of New Zealand cruising.

Climate

New Zealand's climate is island temperate, and so the season can be shorter than places where the weather is determined by continental landmass. The best time to charter a yacht in New Zealand is during the warmer, drier months from November to April. Temperatures peak in February, the height of summer but very comfortable for sailing. The prevailing winds blow from the westerly quadrant, south-west through north-west Beaufort 1- 4 between November and April. There is a tidal range around the coast of two metres.
