Marlborough Sounds Yacht Charter Guide

The Marlborough Sounds are a maze of deep sunken river valleys, formed as the top of the South Island dipped into the sea over millions of years. The entire South Island is world renowned for its dramatic and picturesque landscapes, and this impressive region on the northern tip should be high on any list of places to see.

The Marlborough Sounds are unique, there is no doubt about that. The Sounds themselves offer shelter and deep water where common practice is to tie up to the shore. The water's edge around here is dotted with beach cribs - modest Kiwi holiday homes - and some more substantial homes. What is missing are the roads, and access around this far-flung community is by boat. It's a busy place of fishermen, boaties and holiday makers coming and going, but there is so much space the Marlborough Sounds offer one of the more solitary charters on offer.  Where this place differs from other remote destinations is in the lodges, hotels and cafes that also populate the area. Make time to come ashore and take in refreshments, a meal, entertainment, and mix with the friendly locals.

Inside the Sounds, the sailing can be marginal and power boats are popular here. The wind is usually blowing one way or the other down the valley you are sailing, with the occasional gust rushing down off the high hills. Outside the Sounds however, a great sailing destination awaits, especially if you set a course for Nelson and Golden Bay. This part of New Zealand has the most sunshine hours in the country. And so while its location is well to the south as far as sailboat charters go, the norh-facing aspect creates a micro-climate that leaves the rain on the other side of the Southern Alps, while the coastal regions bask in the sunshine.

Between Nelson's Tasman Bay and Golden Bay to the west is the headland that supports Abel Tasman National Park. New Zealand's most accesible and popular national park, Abel Tasman is a fabulous nature reserve with a stunning coastline, waterways and estuaries full of things that scuttle, swim, fly or simply grow.

Nelson is a major provincial center of business, while the towns of Golden Bay are much smaller rural settlements that now boast a unique image due to an influx of artisan and whole earth communities. Creative types are drawn to this relatively remote region by prospects of an enviable lifestyle, creating an actively relaxed pace of life, if you know what I mean.
