About Yacht Charters in the Hauraki Gulf

With over 200 sheltered anchorages, you could choose to visit a different stopover every weekend for a year and not return to the same bay.  Distances between islands and anchorages are generally further than they are in the Bay of Islands.

Waiheke-Island

12 miles east of Auckland, and largest of the inner islands, Waiheke Island is a good place to replenish supplies and to dine ashore. Ashore, there are country walks. Boutique vineyards beckon you to relax and sample their wines, and for the enthusiasts there’s a range of local crafts, potting, leatherwork, weaving and art. The anchorages in the southern end of Waiheke and Ponui Island are refreshingly fringed by sandy beaches and rolling farmlands. There are lots of beautiful coves to explore and a choice of anchorages to shelter in all weathers.

Coromandel Coast

12 miles further east across the Firth of Thames, lies the historic Coromandel Coast and township, a memory of gold rush history and a colourful past. Te Kouma Harbour is a large natural landlocked harbour. Today, its steep, wild mountains, its forests, and its lovely coastline are favoured by nature enthusiasts and visiting yachtsmen.

Great Barrier island

50 miles north east of Auckland, Great Barrier Island guards the outer extremities of the Hauraki Gulf. The 'Barrier' is a favourite yacht charter destination in itself, and offers some of the best diving and fishing in New Zealand. You could easily spend a week here exploring the maze of inlets and hidden deep-water harbours.

A hot thermal spring, rare birds, ivory beaches, outstandingly scenic bush walks and superb seafood are among the island's other attractions. You will find several good locations where you can renew your supplies, and find a sheltered anchorage for the night.

Kawau-Island

Cruise 26 miles north of Auckland to Kawau Island and the spectacular Bon Accord Harbour. Once a major source of manganese and copper, it later became the island retreat of Governor Sir George Grey. Part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park, it's east coast is rugged and inhospitable while the east has sheltered coves and inlets making it a favourite stopover for cruising yachtsmen. A different bay for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it's also the perfect spot for fishing and sailing. Ashore, visit the historic Mansion House and picnic in the gardens with the richly colourful peacocks. For the energetic take a brisk stroll over the pine- forested ridges. There are long walks and short walks!
