Caribbean Yacht Charter Guide

The main Caribbean and British Virgin Islands yacht charter season runs from November through to July. The primary high season is from mid-December to March when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare and more likely to hit the East Coast of the U.S. than the Caribbean. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean in general and British Virgin Islands in particular. However as well as running the risk of storms this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter or non existent winds. As with many yacht charter locations the British Virgin Islands shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is a great time to charter a yacht as it has less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather and warm steady breeze.

Sailing down wind through the Caribbean's windward Islands and the Grenadines involves visiting a series of individually famous cruising destinations. St Lucia and its Pitons, St Vincent's Blue Lagoon, Bequia's Admiralty and Friendship Bay, the five uninhabited islands of the Tobago Quays surrounded by a horseshoe reef, Carriacou and Grenada, "The Spice Island" and the perfect conclusion for some terra firma based activities.

The ports in this region once served as critical trading centres for the exotic produce sought after by their colonial authorities. These days the towns are frequented by the worlds elite as they seek out their piece of paradise.

Traditionally a more expensive destination, competition and favourable exchange rates make the Caribbean as affordable as any other prime sailing destination.

The winds are mainly from the Northeast especially around the peak season either side of Christmas. The sailing involves short stretches of open water with a stiff breeze on your aft quarter making for quick passages of the most enjoyable sailing to any of the many Islands for a lunch stop or stay overnight.
